Limestone Retaining Walls in Perth

Limestone is Perth’s signature retaining wall material. Walk through almost any established coastal suburb or new estate and you will see rows of pale limestone blocks holding up front gardens, boundaries and driveways. Retaining Walls Perth connects you with a local, insured specialist who can quote a limestone wall for your block.

Cut limestone vs reconstituted limestone

  • Natural cut limestone blocks are quarried and sawn. They have natural variation in colour and texture and can be face-cut or rock-faced (split) for a more rustic look.
  • Reconstituted limestone is crushed limestone and cement cast into consistent blocks. Uniform sizes make for a neater, more regular wall, and blocks come in a range of sizes and colours.

Why limestone suits Perth’s sandy ground

Many limestone walls are built as gravity walls: the sheer weight and width of the blocks holds back the soil. On free-draining Perth sand that approach works well, and one Perth landscaper notes limestone “performs well on sandy soils and works as a gravity wall system for taller applications”. Joints between blocks also let water out, though a proper drainage pipe and aggregate behind the wall is still recommended.

The trade-off is width. A tall gravity wall needs deeper blocks or more courses at the base, which takes up more of your yard than a slim concrete sleeper wall. On tight new-estate boundaries that matters. Limestone walls on boundaries also need thought about the fence on top: the City of Rockingham points out that a mass limestone wall may not leave room for a fence to be placed in the ground behind it, and Colorbond-type fence posts may need to be drilled into the stones, so the wall should be designed for that and for wind loading on the fence.

Typical limestone wall costs in Perth (as of 2026)

Published Perth guides give typical installed ranges of about $420 to $680 per square metre of wall face (Landscapes WA, Sept 2026) and about $450 to $650 per square metre (Luke’s Landscaping, 2026). Expressed per lineal metre at about 1 m high, one guide gives about $295 to $630. Footings, drainage, engineering and permits are usually extra. See the full Perth cost guide.

How long does limestone last?

Built on a proper footing with drainage, published Perth guides put limestone walls at 50 years or more. Natural limestone weathers and can be sealed; reconstituted blocks are more uniform. Failures are usually about design, not the stone: walls that were too narrow for their height, had no footing, or had water and a driveway load behind them.

Where limestone works best

  • Front gardens and street-facing walls where the traditional Perth look suits the house
  • Terraced gardens on coastal sandy slopes
  • Boundary walls on new estates where the developer palette uses limestone
  • Feature steps, planter beds and pool surrounds

Limestone and permits

Material doesn’t change the rules: a limestone wall retaining more than 0.5 m generally needs a building permit, and the R-Codes control height near boundaries. Some councils list limestone among acceptable boundary wall materials; the City of Kwinana’s information note names brickwork, limestone or granite block, and concrete post and panel as masonry-type materials for walls on or near a boundary. See the WA permit guide.

Questions to ask your specialist

  • Is this a gravity wall or a reinforced/engineered design, and who signs it off?
  • What footing is under the first course?
  • How is drainage handled behind the wall?
  • How will the fence on top be fixed?
  • Natural or reconstituted, and what block sizes?
