Concrete sleeper walls, also called post and panel walls, have become one of the most popular retaining wall systems on Perth’s new estates. Galvanised steel posts are concreted into the ground and reinforced concrete sleepers slide in between them. The result is a slim, straight wall that is fast to install and doesn’t rot or get eaten by termites. Retaining Walls Perth connects you with a local, insured specialist who can quote one for your block.

How a concrete sleeper wall works
Unlike a limestone gravity wall, a sleeper wall gets its strength from the steel posts and their footings. Post size (C-channel or H-section), spacing and footing depth are set by the wall height and the load behind it, and taller walls are usually engineer-designed. The sleepers themselves are reinforced concrete, commonly sold in 2.4 m lengths to suit post spacing. Drainage aggregate and a slotted pipe go behind the bottom sleeper.
Finishes
- Plain smooth grey or coloured (charcoal, sandstone tones)
- Woodgrain-effect, for a timber look without the rot
- Stackstone or stone-effect faces
Finish affects price; see below.
Typical concrete sleeper wall costs in Perth (as of 2026)
- General range: typically about $260 to $630 per lineal metre (Landscapes WA, Sept 2026).
- At 1 m high: typically about $315 to $630 per lineal metre; at about 1.5 m: about $420 to $1,000 (What’s The Damage).
- WA breakdown (The Quote Yard): under 600 mm about $220 to $320; 1.0 m smooth about $280 to $420; 1.0 m woodgrain about $340 to $520; 1.0 m stackstone about $380 to $580; 1.5 m engineered about $420 to $720; 2.0 m engineered about $620 to $880+.
- Components (The Quote Yard): galvanised C-channel post about $140 to $220 each; H-section about $180 to $320; standard 2.4 m sleeper about $95 to $185 each.
Engineering, permits, excavation and old-wall removal are usually extra. Full breakdown in our cost guide.
Pros and cons on Perth blocks
- Slim footprint: takes up far less yard than a wide gravity wall, handy on small estate lots.
- Fast install: often quicker than laying block courses.
- Durability: published Perth guides put them at about 30 to 50 years with proper footings and drainage.
- Fence-friendly: many systems allow fence posts to be integrated.
- Clay country: one Perth landscaper notes concrete sleepers “perform better in reactive clay soils”, relevant around Byford and Armadale.
- Watch-outs: post footings in loose sand need correct depth and concrete; limestone caprock can slow drilling; poor drainage can still push a wall out of line.
Replacing old timber sleeper walls
Many older Perth walls are treated pine sleepers that are now rotting or leaning. Concrete sleepers are a common replacement, sometimes reusing the line of the old wall. Your specialist will check whether the old posts can stay (usually not) and whether the replacement needs a permit; a like-for-like rebuild over 0.5 m generally still does.
Permits
A concrete sleeper wall retaining more than 0.5 m generally needs a building permit in WA, plus an engineer’s design in most cases. See the WA permit guide.
